It’s springtime again, and amidst the tulips and lilacs comes something a little less enjoyable: spring cleaning. Winter gear needs to be stashed, while warm-weather items need to make its grand entrance (finally!). As you get your patio and garage in tip-top shape, you can get some heavy lifting done and get in shape, too. Depending on your weight, you can burn between 215 and 315 calories from 30 minutes of carrying and moving boxes – such as clearing out the loft and selling unwanted items, or loading the car boot and taking all those unwanted items to the dump. Also you can burn extra calories getting the garden in shape for all those Summer evening bbq’s by getting your pots planted, as lifting the potting compost is heavy work!. Planting pots can be good for core work and also work the backs of the legs. But don’t toss your form out the window. Just like you consider your stance during gym exercises to be important, the same goes when lifting boxes. Here’s how to do it the safe way:
Before you pick up a box or bag of soil, make sure your path is clear. You may be strong, but the stray skateboard in your way is a recipe for disaster. Next, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, come underneath the item by bending your knees and keeping your back straight, and get a solid grip on the object. Then, tighten your abdominal muscles and lift with your legs and glutes. Always keep the item close to your body and your eyes slightly up to help maintain better spine position. When you need to hoist an item overhead, do the same steps as above but start with a slightly wider stance. As you lift the item overhead, keep your core contracted and arms slightly bent at all times. If you are standing on your tippy toes and about to drop that box, it’s time to bring out the stepladder. Once you’re done getting the heavy lifting in for the day, get excited … it’s time to wash the windows! (FYI, it burns between 135-200 calories in 30 minutes.) For all of you who knows my second passion is cleaning, you will love this article as I love this time of year and getting clean and tidy, but I thought I’d let you know how good it is for you burning calories too!!!!!
